Autumn 2014 Matches Report

WCAGS v Lady Taverners – 13th June, Sunningdale Ladies’ Golf Club

On a VERY hot day in June, eight WCAGS gals converged on Sunningdale Ladies’ Golf Club to challenge The Lady Taverners in our return match. The format was four ball better ball Stableford. Pride was at stake, as we had been well beaten last year and we needed to redress the balance. Chris was Captain of The Day fo4 us and she marshaled her troops in readiness for the battle.

So, our team of me, Chris, June Edney, Pyl, Shirley Moore, Susie Garner, Ruth Bailey and Pauline Weekes, sailed forth into the Surrey undergrowth (lots of tees and gorse) with a warning to watch out for adders on the eighth!! For those who have not played Sunningdale, this is mainly a par three course, but this is not to be sniffed at as a 213 yard par three is a challenge for any lady golfer. The Patron of Sunningdale is Prince Andrew, but alas he did not arrive to present the trophy – probably because there isn’t one!

After an exciting day’s play, the final result was a 2-2 draw. Congratulations to Weeksy and June, Ruth and Patsy for bringing in the points and commiserations to Chris and Pyl, myself and Shirley. A beautiful tea was consumed and the day concluded with speech from Chris and a well made joke. This opened the floodgates (on both sides) for smutty joke time. Shirley did not perform the Zimmer/Vibrator joke. She had already done that out on the course!

The Lady Taverners’ Captain announced that, even though they had spoken on the ‘phone many times, she had never met Pip (and would like to!). This provoked ribald comments all round. Many thanks to Pip and Pam for organising this match. They had wanted to play, but The Lady Taverners (a fund-raising Charity) could only raise 8 and one of those failed to turn up … word has it that she was appearing at The Old Bailey on an embezzlement charge!

Next year, can we win and, perhaps, find a trophy to play for? Sign up for a great day and the chance to play at a very historic golf course.

MCC v WCAGS – 24th September, Lansdown Golf Club

We played the MCC at Landsown and came second again. Although we lost four matches to one, the scores were all very close, except one when Clare and Pip played Julian and Chris and came second by a mile, whilst the other matches were separated either by one or two points.

The following day, we played the Lansdown Ladies in a repeat of our very first match in 1994.

Great atmosphere and the result was repeated from 1994 – WCAGS second! However, the Lansdown ‘gals’ really enjoyed the experience, one of whom – and I quote – said: “I didn’t know golf could be such fun!”. We have booked the date for 2015 and hopefully will get out revenge.
